From the Foster:

Searching for a new hound to love? Want a stunningly handsome dog, that can stop traffic with his looks? Want a dedicated fellow more interested in warming your feet than chasing squirrels? Lovable Buford is just the dog for you!

This big guy is so mellow, so relaxed, and so CHILL at home, you'll barely know he's there. He does like company though, but for the owner that has to be gone for work, he does not like a crate, BUT has proven himself completely trustworthy left on his own. Totally housebroken, and, unlike many bloodhounds, is not a big barker and doesn’t get into mischief. Buford does have skin allergies (the foster and vet are working on this), and, like many floppy eared dogs, his ears need regular cleaning. But he is a generally heathy dog (good eater, good pooper, great long sleeper!) so should not be too much trouble in that department. If you would rather channel surf than hike 5 miles, Buford is a good fit.

That’s not to say he doesn’t love a good walk (lots of great sniffing out there!). His foster walks him twice a day, and he loves his route. But some days he protests a bit, and can sometimes get riled up when he sees another dog or person. His foster is working on this, but because he can be stubborn, he will need a strong willed and physically capable owner. He is probably best in a home without cats or small dogs or young children, as he gets intimidated by too much activity, and his insecurity can show up. But he can also be completely fine around other dogs, so don’t rule him out if you have another one at home.

He would prefer to not live in a home with too many stairs, and hasn’t yet been convinced that car rides are a fun thing, but he is working on it! Buford loves to investigate his surroundings with his bloodhound nose – so much so that he gets so focused he has been known to forget where he is going and crash into things! He knows a few commands, like sit, speak and shake. He is not a fan of toys, but will allow you to wrestle with him occasionally. Honestly, he just wants to be loved, and feel safe – and a good coconut oil massage every now and then would be great! He gets a little scared of new situations, so needs a little reassurance. Buford is looking for a soft bed, a kind hand and a loving voice to listen to as he lives out his golden years. Does your cozy fireplace need a dog in front of it? If so, Buford is your man!

All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.

If you would like to meet/adopt this animal or anyone else, then please fill out an adoption application at  http://secondhandhounds.org/adoption-information/  and the foster(s) will be in touch!  Keep in mind that there may be multiple applicants applying for the same animal(s).  You only need to complete 1 application for multiple animals that you're interested in.

Note  - We change an animal's listing to say "PENDING ADOPTION" when they already had a meet and greet with a family who plans to adopt that animal.  We put "NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS" on a listing when an animal has multiple applications in and the foster has asked to stop accepting any more while they review the applications they've already received.

If you would like to be a foster for Secondhand Hounds, then please fill out a foster application,  http://secondhandhounds.org/fostervolunteer-information/fostering-101/  You can choose the type of animal you'd like to foster and we will supply everything you need (food, collar, bowls, crate, etc.) while the animal is in your care.

Thanks for your interest in Secondhand Hounds!
