Maltese (long coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Small
Name: Bagel This puffball is Bagel (though my 4 year old renamed him Burger, and that seems to be what we call him!). He is a 1 year old (probably purebred) Maltese. He is 8 pounds, but we are working on putting another pound or so on him as he is pretty skinny. He likes food a lot – but does NOT beg; I don’t think it will be a problem! Burger was surrendered to an animal shelter down south because he wasn’t potty trained, but in the time he has been with me, he has never peed in my house, and has only had one #2 accident right after he first arrived and he was not feeling well as he had an infection. I wouldn’t leave him loose in the house for a full work day, but when I take him out every couple of hours, he does just fine! He keeps his kennel clean, and alerted me one night when he had to pee, so we went out. So in my own (pretty experienced) opinion, he is pretty well potty trained and was likely just neglected and sad so was having issues. He is very good in his crate, and I’ve only had him bark in it when another dog barks first, or if he has to go potty. He occasionally barks to talk to you, but it is not obnoxious by any stretch. He will need a fenced yard or to be on a leash at all times. He isn't going to spook and run away, but he is very busy and VERY fast and might wander away quicker than you can keep up with him. Burger is a very happy and playful guy. He loves kids (tolerates getting hauled all over by toddlers) is great with other dogs, and loves playing silly things like tag (his version, of course). His main thing is he wants to be with you all of the time. He wants to sit on your lap, he wants you to carry him around, he wants to lay on the couch with you, and he wants to sleep in your bed. If you don’t want that close of a companion, he probably isn’t the dog for you. The other major consideration for Burger is being a Maltese he really doesn’t shed, but he does require legitimate grooming. He either needs to be shaved down, or combed out daily and groomed regularly. His face definitely needs to be kept up. It took me 30 minutes to comb out his poor neglected face and it was not fun for him (or me!). I am trying to figure out if I can salvage some of his coat right now, but it might end up getting shaved and having to start over due to neglect. He does have very pretty, soft and fluffy hair, though! All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.
