From the Foster:

Storm is a beautiful and intelligent dog. She was  found as a stray in Kentucky, and it is very clear that she had to depend on herself for a lot of things in life before rescue, and wasn't given a good foundation of trust with her people. Most importantly, Storm will need an experienced home (even better a German Shepherd experienced home) who is willing and expecting to do further training with her to help overcome some of her fear and reactivity. This is NUMBER ONE.

Storm does well with another assertive dog, but she tends towards dominant so probably a male dog, or a very submissive female. That said, she loves to play with another dog and will take their lead in other aspects of her life.

Storm is very scared of new people and new situations. It takes her some time to warm up to a new person, and she does have some leash reactivity (she is scared of other dogs and sometimes people while walking on a leash, and will bark and lunge). This means she will need a strong and assertive owner who can handle that. Because of it, she should go to a home with a 6 foot fence (she can jump a short fence) and no children under the age of 16. This isn’t actually because she doesn’t like kids, but it is because any new person is a stranger, and while she would bond strongly to a child in her home, she could be a risk to friends who come over and don’t respond properly to her.

The great news about all of this is that there is a TON of training available, and a lot of resources, and she is VERY food motivated! She has already started on training for leash reactivity, and is already doing better. We want her transition to a forever home to be successful, and it CAN be with commitment and understanding. We will set you up with all of the tools you need to do so.

If you feel ready to commit to working with this beautiful girl, I am confident that the rewards will be worth the work. She will make an amazing companion for the right family.

All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.

I f you would like to meet/adopt this animal or anyone else, then please fill out an adoption application at http://secondhandhounds.org/adoption-information/ and the foster(s) will be in touch!  Keep in mind that there may be multiple applicants applying for the same animal(s).  You only need to complete 1 application for multiple animals that you're interested in.

Note   - We change an animal's listing to say "PENDING ADOPTION" when they already had a meet and greet with a family who plans to adopt that animal.  We put "NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS" on a listing when an animal has multiple applications in and the foster has asked to stop accepting any more while they review the applications they've already received.

If you would like to be a foster for Secondhand Hounds, then please fill out a foster application,   http://secondhandhounds.org/fostervolunteer-information/fostering-101/   You can choose the type of animal you'd like to foster and we will supply everything you need (food, collar, bowls, crate, etc.) while the animal is in your care.

Thanks for your interest in Secondhand Hounds!
