Name: Lana
Age: Approximate DOB 6/21/13
Gender: Female
Breed: Heeler/Cattle Dog
Weight: 37 pounds
Dog friendly: Yes
Cat friendly:  Unknown, we don't have a cat and no exposure to date.

Kid friendly:  So much, yes, especially Buddy. We have two boys (ages 4 & 6) and Buddy loves running around with them. Lana is a bit more timid and doesn't enjoy the roughhousing, but she is a momma bear.  For example, if she notices Buddy getting too rough with the boys, she will run Buddy off.

House trained:  We are about 80% there with both dogs.  Neither was really house broken when they arrived as they were outside, farm dogs.
Crate trained:  Yes! Both dogs sleep in their crates overnight and when we give the directive, "Kennel" - they will go in.  Buddy does not mind his kennel.  Lana does have some anxiety about going in her kennel (when it's not during a time that is on her normal schedule), but she will settle down within 10 minutes.
Energy level: Average
History: Surrendered with litter
Adoption Fee: $500 for the pair

From the Foster: They say sons are the anchors of a mother's life, this duo [Buddy and Lana] are no different.

Buddy, while only 27 pounds, has been momma Lana's valiant protector and the young age of eight months.

Lana, from what we can tell has been the product of a backyard breeder for the past few years.  Most recently, Lana had a litter of pups (Lab/Heeler mix) and was abandoned by her previous owner.

With a litter of puppies and one, Buddy, from another litter - the dogs were rescued by a family in Oklahoma.  We heard while in foster in Oklahoma the Buddy was Lana's right hand in caring and protecting the 8 young puppies.

The two dogs are very bonded and seek each other out. When letting them out of their kennels in the morning, the two do not use the restroom, eat, drink until they have thoroughly greeted one another.

While Buddy is Lana's anchor, they do have very different personalities. Lana is very quiet, gentle, somewhat timid, and prefers men.  While they have only been in foster for a week, we're catching glimpses of Lana's personality very slowly and are excited to see her open up.

Buddy is a force to be reckoned with.  Buddy, like most puppies, is very curious. Given the rough start in life, Buddy is very gregarious and loves to meet new people.  He will often give Lana a run for her money and wrestle, but Lana is not shy and will gently put him in his place (like a good mother should) when he gets to be too much.

Overall, the two are very fun and easy dogs.  They will require a fenced in yard as they do like to run and explore. They don't require or ask for a ton of attention, but love to be loved on.  We hope you'll consider opening up your home to this very special duo.

Fun facts about the dogs:
  • They love to swim
  • They both have amazing verticles - Lana has come close to clearing our 6' fence.
  • Great on leashes
  • They are obsessed with the garden hose
  • Buddy is good with strange/new dogs
  • Lana has some hesitation with new dogs.  To date, she has only met them on a leash (when the other dogs have not been leashed - so that could have caused some anxiety).
  •

All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.

I f you would like to meet/adopt this animal or anyone else, then please fill out an adoption application at http://secondhandhounds.org/adoption-information/ and the foster(s) will be in touch!  Keep in mind that there may be multiple applicants applying for the same animal(s).  You only need to complete 1 application for multiple animals that you're interested in.
