Name: Avery Weight: 60 pounds Energy level: Low/Average  Avery is such a sweet, gentle boy! He is VERY shy when first making introductions, and will take a couple of days to fully trust/warm-up to you…but give him time. Once you earn his trust, he’s a happy friend for life! We received a note from his previous foster that said his previous owners “didn’t treat him very well” - which could explain his shyness. He was also very hesitant to explore other areas of our home, and it took several days for him to feel “safe” enough to leave his crate and venture around. Thankfully we have a very outgoing resident female dog who helped bring him out of his shell – and that has helped immensely. They are now best buddies! He’s eating well (LOVES getting treats too!) and enjoys playing in the yard which has helped strengthen his remaining back leg. He’s getting around great now, and can even tackle stairs with ease (again, this took several days before he’d attempt it – but once he did, oh boy!)
We feel he’d do best in a home with another post-puppyhood outgoing dog – who is respectful of his disability and won’t jump up on his back at all when playing. Or as an only dog. Older, understanding, children are also probably best for Avery, since we wouldn’t want to risk any additional stress to his back or injury to his remaining back leg.
We find that we usually forget that he only has three legs! He’s getting around great, but does need to be lifted in and out of a car for road trips, etc. - but once he’s in a car, he does fine with that too! We also have cats at home, and he could care less, which is super awesome. He’s super passive and not at all aggressive to other dogs. He’s a chill dude that just wants to do his own thing and get some occasional belly rubs, hugs and kisses. =)
One thing – we’re not sure if Avery was allowed in a home very much (which could also explain how hesitant he was to explore). He does have an occasional accident in the house, and when he’s in his crate, so we’re working on that. He actually does better if left out of his crate on a soft, comfy dog bed in the home. He’s not a big fan of being locked in a crate – however, with the door open, he does use it as his “safe spot” and will go curl up in it if anxious or afraid. But If he’s let outside for potty breaks on a schedule, he does ok.
He doesn’t seem to recognize any basic training commands such as “sit,” “stay,” etc. But he’s honestly so mellow that they aren’t really necessary. We’ve been working with him on those as well. He recognizes "no" and his name.
He also LOVES to be outside. He will let you know if there’s anything suspicious around with a couple loud, impressive barks - but nothing excessive. He could lounge around outside for hours if you’d let him. We have a fenced yard for him to run around and play in - which he greatly enjoys. He doesn't seem to be leash-trained at all, and gets fearful while wearing one, so he would probably do best in a safe, fenced environment.
Avery is a fantastic dog that will make his new family extremely happy. Patience and lots of support and affection is the key to Avery ’s heart. We love him to pieces and hope to find him a perfect forever home! All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.
